The symptoms of the plague were devastating and gross. The impact on medieval society was great due to these. The cause of all symptoms was due to Yersinia pestis in the blood of fleas.

- Buboes (enlarged lymph nodes) in armpits, neck & groin
- Nausea, vomiting
- Headaches
- Aching joints
- Discharge of bloody mucus / saliva
- Infected lungs
- High fever
- Skin turning purple / black
